How it works

Picture
Looking at each individual case holistically, Ruth endeavors to find the root of the cause and works from there, with the aim to facilitate the most effective and permanent healing.

Two people with the same condition will rarely have the same medicines, this is because a Herbalist recognises that both the constitution and circumstance of the individual case is unique and complex.  The aetiology of illness is also unique to the journey taken by the patient. This is why lasting healing is only made by unravelling this journey and the herbs are used to bring balance to the physical systems which are indicated during initial consultation.

A Medical Herbalist is trained not only in the Medicinal plants multi-dimensional chemistry and energetics, we are trained in pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, physical examination, analysis of diet and nutrition and so much more.

We are trained to look at the unique journey of an individual to their dis-ease, a journey that often takes a life time of imbalance, stress, trauma, deficiency, exposure- the list goes on- there will rarely be a quick (or lasting) fix without a deep analysis of how the pattern of ill health has formed. We acknowledge that a curative treatment for illness requires a sophisticated and complex understanding of the dynamics and interactions within the body. This is why, to see the best results of using plant medicines for long term or chronic health conditions is seen by consulting a professional herbalist. Herbal medicines are dynamic and their combined chemistry means that there simply is not ‘a herb that is good for’ or a ‘one hit wonder’. A herbalist collates a high level of information in case taking and a bespoke medicine will then be made.

With the initial consultation taking usually 1.5 hours we look at the complete medical history of our patient, we will look. At the presenting complaints, analyse diet and nutrition, gain an understanding of the individual constitution of the patient and then go through a list of questions to gain insight into the functioning of all the physical systems i.e. cardiovascular, respiratory, eliminatory, endocrine etc. We often then spend several hours unravelling the history, finding the patterns of trauma and circumstance to discover the timeline of this individual journey - to then formulating a bespoke treatment plan, looking at the holistic picture of a persons heath, body and mind.

Illness happens when we are out of balance and our work as herbalists is to facilitate the understanding of this imbalance with an aim to create a lasting resolution, that puts the individual back in charge of their health.

Often dis-ease arises when a person’s integral balance and vitality is weakened, this can be caused by stress, environmental factors and for many other reasons. Therefore the fundamental principle of treatment is to raise the  body’s natural ability to heal using herbs whilst also addressing the specific issues.

The fundamental aim of treatment is to resolve the underlying problem which is causing the disease, not just giving a quick, symptomatic fix. Ruth believes in empowering a person to maintain a strong and balanced health, with herbs, nutrition and lifestyle advise.

Ruth continues her professional development by regularly attending herbal medicine conferences and seminars.
